On this day, July 7, 1981, Alija Bejti\u0107 (1920\u20131981), one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most distinguished historians, Ottoman scholars, conservators, and researchers of cultural heritage, passed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through his extensive scholarly work, comprising more than 420 publications, he left an enduring mark on the study of the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly Sarajevo and its Ottoman urban heritage. As Director of the City Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, he made an invaluable contribution to the preservation and restoration of Ba\u0161\u010dar\u0161ija. His research on urban development, architecture, endowments (waqfs), and cultural history remains essential reading for scholars today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photograph we are sharing today shows Alija Bejti\u0107 with his family, reminding us of a man whose life was devoted to researching, protecting, and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His work continues to inspire everyone dedicated to the study and safeguarding of our shared heritage<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In honour of his life and legacy, the Sarajevo Museum is preparing an exhibition dedicated to Alija Bejti\u0107, scheduled to open later this year. The exhibition will present his scholarly achievements, his contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, and the lasting legacy he left to future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remembering Alija Bejti\u0107 also reminds us of the importance of those whose knowledge, dedication, and commitment helped preserve the history of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.<\/p>\n\n\n
