The controversy surrounding the concept of numismatic collections in our museums, and the frequent misinterpretation of numismatics as a specific scientific discipline, often stems from unprofessional views and a lack of understanding of the contemporary objectives of numismatics as a science. Numismatics is an independent branch of the study of human history and its material culture. Its primary task is the study of money in all its forms. From the earliest types of currency to modern forms of payment, numismatics encompasses the comprehensive analysis of all monetary objects. These objects, regardless of form, shape, or meaning, are central to numismatic studies. Money serves not only as a means of payment and exchange but also as a historical, political, and economic document, and it is often a significant artistic and cultural monument. Additionally, money provides crucial insights into the development of writing and language.

Coins are often accompanied by medals, which, similar in form to coins, provide supplementary data to the information gleaned from coin studies. Known as "medallions" in classical antiquity, these enhance the understanding of historical contexts provided by coins. The numismatic collection of the Museum of Sarajevo was established by a decision of the Steering Comitty in 2005. It includes numerous specimens of coins, paper bills, medals, commemoratives, plaques, badges, stamps, and tokens. The collection spans several key areas, as outlined in its corresponding inventories: Roman imperial coins, medieval coins, Ottoman coins, modern era coins, and medals. Each of these categories offers valuable insights into different historical periods and cultural contexts. The main areas covered by the corresponding inventories are: Roman imperial coins, coins of the Middle Ages, Ottoman coins, coins of the modern era and, finally, medals. As a special rarity, on a global scale, it would be difficult to single out any of those entities.
