Mothers and children often remain on the margins of historiographical research on the ancient period, despite their important role in family and social structures. This paper examines the gender roles and familial status of mothers and children through the case study of the Sarajevo region in the Roman period. The introductory section analyses narrative sources, primarily the text of Cassius Dio, with particular emphasis on the role of mothers and children during the, The Great Illyrian Uprising focusing on the siege of Arduba and the surrender of Bato’s son, Scaeva. The central part of the paper is based on the analysis of epigraphic monuments, above all funerary inscriptions as the only type of epigraphic evidence from this region that provides both textual and visual information on family life. Special attention is devoted to relief representations of mothers and children from monuments discovered in the areas of Ilidža and Hadžići, which allow for a deeper understanding of family relations and social values in the interior of Roman Dalmatia. The results of the research indicate that most of the monuments belonged to local elites and reflect a strong influence of Roman cultural models. Nevertheless, an important exception is the stele of the veteran Titus Aurelius Saturninus and his wife Aurelia Amucriana, on which elements of indigenous tradition are preserved. The paper also corrects a previous misinterpretation of the decurion Victorinus from the inscription found in Krivoglavci as a child. Methodologically, the study is primarily based on the prosopographical method and adopts a multidisciplinary approach combining epigraphic, onomastic, and archaeological data.
