“Shadows of Potočari” by Velija Hasanbegović is opened at At mejdan park in Sarajevo
A documentary exhibition features 20 black-and-white photographs taken in Potočari and Srebrenica during and after collective funerals, capturing moments of deep sorrow, silence, and the dignified endurance of the survivors
Hasanbegović, a long-time photojournalist and witness to the contemporary history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, uses his lens to record fragments of reality that often remain on the margins of official narratives. “Shadows of Potočari” is more than a documentary collection – it is a voice for those who can no longer speak and a testimony to the pain carried by those who remain. The faces of mothers, gazes across gravesites, and hands embracing headstones – each frame is infused with grief, but also dignity.
The exhibition’s title symbolically evokes the shadows of the past that continue to follow the families of victims, as well as the shadows that we, as a society, must not forget. These photographs are not only an act of memorialization, but a call for accountability, empathy, and continued confrontation with the truth.
Exhibition is dislocated 11.7. in Brusa bezistan where it will be open until 20 July.
