Abstract

Following the success of the Bosnian army in quelling the people in the Smederevo sanjak and, in particular, in taking Belgrade, the vati of Bosnian, Derendeli Silahdar Ali-pasha returned to Travnik and attempted to rute the Eyalet with a rod of iran. The Bosniacs, and in particular the people of Sarajevo, took this to mean the abolition of the privileges previously conferred on them by the Sublime Port or Sultan, which they had regarded as permanent and unalterable. This inevitably led to a clash between the vati and the Bosniacs, which broke aut in 1814, first in Mostar, then in the Bosnian krajina or frontier region, briefly in Travnik, and finally with the people of Sarajevo. The vati successfully quashed the unrest in the Krajina, Travnik and Mostar, but was bested by the people of Sarajevo. The army they raised against the va/i's army defeated the vali's advance guard on the outskirts of Sarajevo, while the main battle near Vitez a/so ended in victory far Sarajevo. ln this they were reinforced by military units from other parts of the Eyalet, and the resistance offered by the people of Banja Luka when the vati tried to advance on their town. The clashes were resolved when the vati went back on his decision to revoke some of the privileges enjoyed by the people of Sarajevo and to punish the leaders of the resistance in the same way as he had the leaders of the Mostar uprising.
