As part of the “Our Heritage” lecture series, a museum pedagogue and educator from the Sarajevo Memorial Center will appear as a guest lecturer at the 20th public lecture of the Sarajevo Museum, speaking on the topic “The Tunnel of Hope.” The War Tunnel is one of the most important symbols of the siege of Sarajevo and, more broadly, one of the key sites of the Bosnian state, both in its recent past and in its overall history.
The Tunnel of Hope is not merely an underground passage, nor a randomly dug hole. It is a testament to human perseverance, collective courage, and the decision not to abandon life, dignity, and hope despite complete encirclement. It is a place where history ceases to be abstract and memory becomes an obligation.
Lecturer Irfan Gazdić will speak about the Tunnel of Hope not only as a historical fact, but as a living heritage—an empirical experience that obliges us to understand the past, to pass it on to younger generations, and to return to it repeatedly, without forgetting and without relativization.
