From humble beginnings to a significant cultural institution

From humble beginnings to a significant cultural institution — tomorrow we celebrate the birthday of the Museum of Sarajevo and its many years of service to culture.

On this occasion, we share an excerpt from the monograph “75 Years in the Service of Culture”, from the authorial text of the Director of the Museum of Sarajevo, Indira Kučuk Sorguč, which testifies to the beginnings and development of our institution:

"It began modestly, in the attic of Sarajevo’s City Hall. In a small room with two writing desks, one of which was borrowed, two chairs and a wardrobe, sat the first director, Prof. Vojislav Bogičević, and his assistant, Ljubica Mladenović, and next to it was a small room resembling a mutvak where museum objects were kept. Under the managerial auspices of the second director of the Museum of the City of Sarajevo, Professor of Literature Ahmet Grebo, the museum was institutionally consolidated, and museological structures were created and established on which the inner being of this institution, its heart — the museum fund — still rests today, from which a dynamic museological creative matrix is born and developed. In the period from 1951 to 1970, through dedicated work and high-quality strategic decisions, including the engagement of professional staff — curators, conservators, preparators, as well as administrative personnel — Ahmet Grebo established the Museum on solid personnel and infrastructural foundations. This was also the period when the Museum moved from the inadequate premises in the City Hall to the building of the Sharia Judges’ School, which remains remembered by generations of Sarajevans, contemporaries of the Museum, as the place where the Museum of the City of Sarajevo was housed."

Along with this post, we are sharing photographs from the Museum of Sarajevo’s photo archive — from its first days of operation in the City Hall, as well as photographs of Director Ahmet Grebo with the Museum’s employees.

Thank you to everyone who has created, built, and preserved the Museum of Sarajevo and its values throughout the generations.
