21st Public Lecture from the “Our Heritage” Cycle

Museum of Sarajevo is pleased to invite you to the 21st public lecture in the “Our Heritage” series entitled “Natural Disasters and Fires in Late Ottoman Sarajevo and Its Surroundings.”

Natural disasters and fires have always been part of everyday life and have significantly shaped human experience throughout history. This lecture offers insight into natural disasters and fires in the Bosnian Sandžak, which included the Sarajevo Kadiluk, in the final years of Ottoman rule — during the period of the Bosnian Vilayet (1866–1878). Through a broader historical context, the causes and consequences of these events will be examined, highlighting how local authorities responded to such challenges, as well as how these events were experienced by the population itself.

Lecturer: Amer Maslo, Senior Associate at the Oriental Institute of the University of Sarajevo. His research focuses on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans in the late Ottoman period, as well as the development of historiography and intellectual thought in the 19th and 20th centuries.
