About the Museum

Sarajevo Museum

The Sarajevo Museum is a public institute founded by Sarajevo Canton, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It now consists of the main building, with depots, and five dependencies: Svrzo’s House, the Despić House, the Jewish Museum, the Brusa Bezistan, and the Museum of Sarajevo 1878-1914.

In the depots and annexes, museologically processed objects that tell about the past of the city of Sarajevo are kept and exhibited, from prehistoric settlements on Butmir, Illyrian and Roman settlements, medieval Bosnia, the Ottoman era and the Austro-Hungarian period to the present day.

Mission and vision of the Museum of Sarajevo

The mission is to research, collect, preserve, protect, and present the cultural and historical heritage of Sarajevo and its surroundings, which represents an essential and integral part of the overall Bosnian-Herzegovinian cultural identity — in all its ethnic, social, and aesthetic diversity.

The vision is to contribute - through its scientific, museological, cultural, and other related disciplinary research processes, and through the application of new technologies—to the high-quality, competent, and relevant study of the past, for the benefit of the broader public, the education of all social groups, and the sustainable use of cultural heritage.
