Brusa
bezistan

This monumental building was constructed in 1551 by Rustem Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent. It originally served as a place for selling silk, which the founder himself produced in Bursa. The Brusa Bezistan has a rectangular base (29.5 x 20.5 m), is built of stone, and is covered with six domes and two smaller ones. The massive pillars inside the bezistan have a structural role, supporting the domes above them, which were once used to store archival documents and seals. During the siege of Sarajevo (1992–1995), the Brusa Bezistan was damaged, but after extensive renovation work, it now houses the Permanent Exhibition of the Museum of Sarajevo, ensuring the continued preservation of this object of high cultural heritage value. Conceptually, the Permanent Exhibition is organized chronologically, and the display of archaeological material is divided into three main sections: prehistory, antiquity (where the oldest lily motif in Bosnia and Herzegovina is exhibited), and the Middle Ages. The Bezistan Gallery displays artifacts from the Ottoman period (including the most elaborate equipment of an Ottoman warrior) and from the time of the Austro-Hungarian administration in Sarajevo.
