On this day in 2024, Sevdalinka was inscribed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Sevdalinka – the traditional Bosnian and Herzegovinian urban folk song – has withstood the test of time for centuries, living in a kind of wondrous symbiosis with generations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is a song of the urban Bosnian milieu, which, through the power of its poetics, its refined lyrical expression, and its pure emotion, has become part of the spiritual identity of this land and far beyond. Sevdalinka is the heritage of humanity.
