At a time when there was no radio, television, or social media, Sarajevo had a town crier.
He was the voice of the bazaar and the neighbourhoods, a man who brought news directly to the people.
Before making any announcement, the town crier would beat a drum , signaling that an important message was about to be delivered.
Sales and purchases, official orders, public calls, and news were spread by voice, remembered on the move, and passed from person to person.
An original town crier’s drum can be seen today in the permanent exhibition of Brusa Bezistan – a small witness to the everyday life of old Sarajevo.
