April 6 is a deeply symbolic date in the history of Sarajevo. On this day in 1941, the city was first bombed by the Nazi Wehrmacht, marking the beginning of one of the most difficult periods in its past. On the same date in 1945, Sarajevo was liberated by Yugoslav Partisan units, restoring its freedom after years of occupation.
Decades later, on April 5 and 6, 1992, the siege of the city began, carried out by the former Jugoslovenska narodna armija, the Vojska Republike Srpske, and Serbian paramilitary forces—a siege that lasted 44 months.
This date reminds us of suffering, but also of the strength, dignity, and enduring spirit of Sarajevo.
