On this day, 17 August 1834, Husein-kapetan Gradaščević (1802–1834) - one of the most significant figures in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina and leader of the Movement for Bosnian Autonomy - passed away.
Born in Gradačac, Husein-kapetan demonstrated exceptional abilities from an early age. At the age of 19, he assumed the position of captain of the Gradačac Captaincy. In 1831, he was proclaimed Vizier of Bosnia and led one of the most significant political and military movements in the country’s history. Following the suppression of the uprising, he was forced to leave his homeland. He spent the final days of his life in Istanbul, where he was buried at Eyüp Cemetery.
On the anniversary of his death, we are particularly proud to highlight that the Museum of Sarajevo preserves one of the most valuable objects associated with his life - a binjiš, a ceremonial men’s cloak that belonged to Husein-kapetan Gradaščević.
This exceptionally valuable object has been part of the Ethnological Collection of the Museum of Sarajevo since 1950, when it was purchased from Mileva Ćesović of Tuzla, who was authorized by Rašida Kulović, the great-granddaughter of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević.
By preserving this binjiš, we safeguard not only a valuable museum object but also the memory of a man who left an indelible mark on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
