Portraits that tell Sarajevo’s history

At our permanent exhibition in Brusa Bezistan, next to the gallery “Sarajevo as Imagination”, featuring works by prominent Bosnian and Herzegovinian painters, visitors can also see portraits of Sarajevo’s mayors from the period of Austro-Hungarian administration.

On display are portraits of Mustaj-bey Fadilpašić (1878–1892), a work by Špira Bocarić ; Mehmed-bey Kapetanović Ljubušak (1877–1878 / 1893–1899), painted by Ivana Kobilca; Nezim ef. Škaljić (1899–1905), also by Špira Bocarić; and Esad-beg Kulović (1905–1910), painted by Rudolf Valić .

Also displayed in the gallery are the portraits of two mayors, father and son: Ragib ef. Čurčić (1875–1877) — the last head of Sarajevo during Ottoman rule, and Fehim ef. Čurčić (1910–1915) — the last mayor during Austro-Hungarian administration. The portraits are the work of academic painter Mehmed Klepo.

Visit Brusa Bezistan and discover Sarajevo through the figures of its mayors and works of art that bear witness to an important historical period.
