On this day, February 5, 1994, in the center of Sarajevo, at the Markale market, one of the most horrific crimes against civilians during the siege of the city took place.
Between 12:10 and 12:20 p.m., a 120 mm mortar shell was fired from aggressor positions in the Mrkovići area and landed on the crowded market. In the massacre, 68 innocent citizens of Sarajevo were killed, while 142 people were seriously and lightly wounded.
Markale became a permanent symbol of the suffering of civilians and the brutality of the siege of Sarajevo, deeply engraved in the historical memory of the city and its inhabitants.
