Last night, Brusa Bezistan hosted the 25th public lecture of the Museum of Sarajevo’s “Our Heritage” lecture series, dedicated to Sarajevo’s tekkes, their origins, development, and their significance for the city’s religious, spiritual, cultural, and social life.
The lecture was delivered by Professor Edin Urjan Kukavica, PhD, a double doctorate holder in Educational Sciences and Political Sciences, and a professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of Sarajevo.
Through an insightful and engaging presentation, Professor Kukavica spoke about the role of dervish institutions—tekkes, zawiyas, and khānqāhs—in fostering spirituality, education, and charitable work, as well as their importance in the emergence and development of Sarajevo. Special attention was given to the city’s most significant tekkes, including the Hadži Sinan Tekke, Isa-bey’s Zawiya, the Skender Pasha Tekke, the Gaziler Tekke, the Fadil Pasha Tekke, and Gazi Husrev-bey’s Khānqāh, all of which represent invaluable monuments of the cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The large audience and the lively discussion that followed the lecture once again confirmed the importance of the “Our Heritage” lecture series, through which the Museum of Sarajevo brings lesser-known yet exceptionally valuable aspects of the city’s rich cultural and historical heritage closer to the public.
