INVITATION TO A PUBLIC LECTURE FROM THE "OUR HERITAGE" SERIES

The Museum of Sarajevo invites you to a new lecture from the "Our Heritage" series entitled "Sarajevo in the Century of Splendour and Dust", to be delivered by Dr Muamer Hodžić, Senior Research Associate at the Oriental Institute in Sarajevo.

What was Sarajevo like in the 17th century? How did Evliya Çelebi describe the city? Why was Sarajevo burned by Prince Eugene of Savoy in 1697? Drawing on Ottoman archival sources, court records, travel accounts and contemporary historiographical research, the lecture will explore the period of Sarajevo's greatest urban, economic and cultural flourishing, as well as the events that marked the end of this remarkable era.

The audience will have the opportunity to discover everyday life in 17th-century Sarajevo—its bazaar, mahalas, bridges, caravanserais, places of worship and waqfs (endowments), as well as the people whose work, knowledge and sense of community shaped the city's identity.

Join us as we explore the story of Sarajevo in its "Century of Splendour and Dust."
